Where Does All the Summer Stuff Go? A Smarter Fall Storage Plan

Summer has a way of expanding into every available corner of the house.

By August, the garage may be holding bicycles, fishing equipment, camping gear, coolers, boating supplies, lawn equipment, sports gear and everything that came home from the last few weekends away. Add a boat, trailer, ATV, motorcycle or recreational vehicle, and parking an actual car in the garage can start to feel ambitious.

Then school starts, schedules change and cooler weather begins creeping closer. That makes late summer and early fall a good time to decide what really needs to stay at home and what would be better stored somewhere else.

Start With the Things You've Finished Using Regularly

You don't have to declare summer officially over. There may still be weekends on the lake, camping trips on the calendar and beautiful weather ahead. But chances are there are already things you aren't using every week. Start there.

Maybe the paddleboards are finished for the season even though the boat isn't. Maybe you've taken your last long RV trip but still expect to use the camper for a fall weekend. Perhaps the kids' summer sports equipment can be packed away while bicycles stay accessible.

Seasonal storage doesn't have to happen all at once. Moving the first round of bulky equipment out can immediately make the garage easier to use.

Give Expensive Equipment More Than Leftover Space

There's another reason to think beyond simply finding somewhere to squeeze everything. Boats, recreational vehicles, motorcycles, ATVs, trailers and collector vehicles represent substantial investments. Keeping them outdoors exposes them to sun, rain, hail, snow and changing temperatures. Keeping them at home may mean dedicating a large portion of the driveway or garage to something you'll use only occasionally for the next several months.

Covered and enclosed vehicle storage gives that equipment a dedicated place during the off-season.

At All Purpose Garages, oversized enclosed units are designed for large vehicles and equipment, with drive-up access, wide doors and room to keep related gear together. Select units also offer electrical access, which can be useful for battery maintenance and other light preparation between trips.

Think Beyond the Vehicle

One of the most useful questions when planning fall storage is not simply, "Where will I park the boat?" It's, "Where does everything that goes with the boat live?" Life jackets. Fishing rods. Towables. Dock equipment. Coolers. Folding chairs. Tools. Cleaning supplies. Trailer equipment.

The same thing happens with RVs, motorcycles and other recreational equipment. The vehicle itself is only part of what occupies the garage.

A larger storage space lets you create one home for the entire activity instead of spreading equipment throughout the basement, shed, driveway and garage. When next season arrives, you're not hunting for the hitch in one place, the life jackets in another and the camping stove somewhere behind the Christmas decorations.

Make the Garage Work for Fall Again

As temperatures fall, you may want garage space for cars again. Lawn equipment will eventually be replaced by leaf blowers, snow shovels and winter supplies. Holiday decorations will come down from shelves. Home projects move indoors.

A seasonal rotation creates room for those changes without forcing you to get rid of the equipment you'll want again next year. It's essentially the same principle as rotating a closet between summer and winter clothing, just on a much larger scale.

Don't Wait Until Everything Has to Move at Once

The first freezing night isn't the ideal time to begin thinking about where the RV, boat or summer equipment will spend the winter. Late summer gives you time to clean equipment, make any needed repairs, organize accessories and decide what needs to remain accessible during fall. It also lets storage become part of putting summer away instead of one more emergency job to complete before cold weather.

Take one more trip. Enjoy the last weekends on the water. Keep using the things you're still using. But when each part of summer is finished, give it a place to go.

Find Room for the Next Season at All Purpose Garages

All Purpose Garages offers oversized enclosed storage in the Overland Park area for RVs, boats, trailers, vehicles, recreational equipment and more. With convenient drive-up access and space for the equipment that goes along with your hobbies, your storage unit can become an extension of your garage instead of simply a place to park something.

Summer doesn't have to end all at once. But your garage doesn't have to hold onto all of it until spring.
